Clean Marina Program

About the Clean Marina Program Clean Marina Logo

Florida's Clean Marina program was established by the state's Clean Boating Partnership, which includes representatives from the boating industry, marine education and outreach programs, and marine enforcement agencies.  The program was established to provide a way to recognize marinas and boatyards that have taken extraordinary steps to help protect water quality and the coastal environment.  The program is administered by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), and details can be found at their website.

The Clean Marina Process

In order to become designated as a Clean Marina, a facility must accumulate more than the required number of points from a 9-page checklist which covers areas including hurricane preparedness, fueling, boat cleaning and stormwater management.  Marina staff can use the checklist to complete a self-assessment independently, or with the help of an advisor, such as their local (DEP) Clean Marina coordinator, a Clean Marina mentor (existing Clean Marina managers) or their local Sea Grant extension agent.  If the facility needs more points, the staff can consult with one of these resource people who will assist them by making recommendations or by providing them with educational materials.  Once the marina staff feel that their facility meets the requirements of the Clean Marina program, they arrange for a facility review by a team of Clean Marina representatives.  A typical team includes representatives from the DEP, Florida Sea Grant and the marine industry.  During the 2-hour review, the team goes through the checklist with marina staff, and walks through the facility.  If the facility meets the requirements (accumulates the necessary points), the team will recommend the facility for designation.  The DEP office in Tallahassee will then order a Clean Marina plaque and flag for the facility, and a designation ceremony will be scheduled.

What can boaters expect from a Clean Marina?

  • Clean Marinas have well-trained staff, who will supervise during fueling and may advise boaters as to proper (safe) fueling techniques.
  • Many Clean Marinas offer pumpout services, most have clean, well-maintained onshore bathroom facilities.  For maps showing marinas that offer pumpout services, see this website.
  • Most Clean Marinas sell biodegradable cleaning products and oil-absorbing materials (e.g. for bilges) in their ship's store.
  • All Clean Marinas provide educational materials for boaters so that boaters can do their part in helping protect the coastal environment.
  • Clean Marina staff regularly pick up trash around the facility and maintain clean, safe working areas.
